, mint is not only an edible and medicinal herb, it is also part of ancient Greek legend. Mint is named after the fresh water nymph, Minta, famous for her beauty which attracted the eye of the Greek god Pluto, god of Hades, the Underworld.
As he was already married, his wife Persiphone, in a vengeful rage, turned Minta into the plant we call mint, so she could stamp her out forever. But Minta would not so easily be stamped out. Every time you walk through or on mint, she releases her famous healing and antiseptic scent. In this way, she is always present and available to be loved. The plant is also known for slowly but steadily encroaching on your garden, considered by many to be just a tad too invasive!
A cooling herb, mint can heal your body, calm your emotions, and even promote healthy brain function. This is a great time of year to be revisiting the healing powers of mint. This lovely, cooling, aromatic plant can be added to salads, made into teas, or used as an essential oil to help calm anxiety, lower fevers, and help prevent and treat colds and flu. It also calms an upset stomach and relieve aches and pains.
